Sponsor Spotlight: Emma

Meet Emma, a most lovely songwriter of romantic and enchanting songs that will have you releasing a breath of a day's tension while listening to her beautiful music (I know I was this morning!). Her music is a reminiscence of Zooey Deschannel and Yael Naim (which by the way, are some of my favorite artists!), and I find that incredibly inspiring even for my own music creations...

...You can find information on her and her music from Emma's official site, and you can also follow her thoughts and inspirations through her blog, which features everything from soothing music clips to fashion related posts, and is updated every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Thank you, Emma!

Big Bad Max and Little Red

I've been a busy girl this week... along with my daily chores and other things, I decided to be ambitious and make my son a Halloween costume all by hand! I was insanely inspired by little Max from the move Where the Wild Things Are, and so decided to use that as my inspiration for his ensemble... seeing as they remind me so much of each other anyway. And then I thought, Lucien being dressed as a boy-dressed as a wolf, why not follow a similar theme and go as Little Red Riding Hood to match (is that a bit of deterioration? oops...) but of course I decided to be ambitious yet again, and make myself a tiny cape out of some scrap material - one chance to get it right a few hours before wearing it.

Dress: vintage 50's
Tights: Target
Black Oxfords: Walmart
Basket: thrifted
Cape: Made it myself, yay!

I must admit the Max suit was way out of my league! I'm quite sure it was simple really, but it was my first EVER hand-made article of clothing... I got my loving hubby to help me, and I am so glad that he was willing, because it really became a pain in the backside!!!

The cape I did completely alone.. which made me almost more proud than the Max suit. I was hoping to post about it along the way, but I became so busy and tired that I really wanted to be done with it... ah well, here are the results for you all to see! (Click here to see more photos from the set!)

Where the Sun Beams Meet Us

Photos by Thom Lennon.

Vintage Mod Jacket: thrifted
50's Shift Dress: Gift from Fab, thank you my dear!!!
50's Hat: Flea Market
Tights: Kohls
Shoes: Target

Fall has taking it's toll on us here... it's been quite chilly and the leaves have completely changed color, most of which have fallen to the earth (although I've heard it's warming up this week, yay!).

I've been meaning to take pictures with this dress, but I'm excited I had the delay because just before picking the location for photos, we stopped at my favorite flea market and I encountered this hat... I've been on a desperate hunt for one like it for a while now, and I was especially excited that it matched the green in my dress!

Keeping Up With The Jonestownses

Just a little inspiration since my plans for an outfit post did not work out for today... I took my new dress to a professional tailor, because the shape of the dress was a little awkward for me (to hem by myself) and I thought the first-time experience would fun as well (but I have to wait a week! sigh...)

I found this too-fun of a shoot on Sesame online magazine, check it out! Oh, sometimes I get really envious of red hair... like the hair on this model. I've also really been into 60's and 70's fashion lately... I don't know why.

Shop Update

Here's a minor shop update and what I'll be working on throughout the day. I've actually been meaning to get to this for about two weeks! It doesn't help that I am still trying to figure out what to do with my new "backdrops"... We have stark-white walls and it really fights me on lighting control....

I've been holding onto these two dresses (above) with a death grip! But after heavy thinking, I've decided they are not for me...

And here are the rest of the updates and close to the last of my stock.... After settling into our new place, I realized I have bags and bags of stuff I've accumulated over time.. So it's definitely time to clear some stuff out!

Where the WIld Things Are

Oh, please forgive me for the lack of posting lately! Looking back at my post-dates, I am completely disappointed in myself... it seems I am still catching up even now, and my head feels crowded with stress of hosting our two gusts (staying with us indefinitely) and dealing with a list of projects.

So I cannot seem dead to the internet world, I wanted to share with all of you our little adventure with Max, in "Where the Wild Things Are". We went to see the movie for my husband's birthday, and I can definitely say I did not regret it.

Doing a movie review for this film seemed out of place to me at first, there's nothing particularly vintage about the costumes or settings... but in reality, I think the movie really hits upon most of us vintage-lover's sense of ascetics and story telling...

The movie starts with a quiet, cold day in Max's life... as we follow him, we discover he's a rowdy ball of complexity wrapped up in an imaginative mind. He's sweet, strong, weak, playful and damaged all at once, in my opinion. I think it takes a simple book and makes it something deeper, something that with every watch, you learn that there is more going on beneath the surface than you originally thought.

It's not long before Max (which is the young actor's name, as well as the character's name!) enters a world strange and appealing. The graphics are intense... it played true to the original story book, I think, and made it come to life. Quirky, visual and antique looking, the movie made me think of vintage dolls and stuffed animals... over-loved and dull-colored.

My favorite monster was Alexander the goat, and I'm quite sure all of you will pick a favorite too!

I loved the film, personally... and I couldn't help but see my son in that little boy! At least, I could easily picture Lucien growing up to be very similar... he is already very rowdy and sweet at the same time.

...So, I definitely recommend the film, I think it appeals to most ages while being gentle enough for children...

And I leave you with that... and I'm still sorry for the lack of something better! I had an outfit post planned, but I don't believe I'll share the dress until I hem it... which I should get to sometime this week (crossing my fingers though!)

Flicker Inspiration...

I thought I would try getting into the habit of doing some flickr inspiration again, just because I really enjoy when others do these!

Some lovely Fall inspiration... I have just really been attracted to dreary colors lately, like greys and black&white! Maybe it's just really soothing...

About The Name

One might associate the word "Koi" with a beautiful fish, but yet another meaning for the word, is "love"; a deep and passionate love, perhaps, like my passion for vintage-style.
